  • FRANCE: PRESIDENT JACQUES CHIRAC TO INAUGURATE NEW NATIONAL LIBRARY

French/Nat President Jacques Chirac is to inaugurate Tuesday France's new National Library. The new focal point for French literature was named after the late President Francois Mitterrand, the man who commissioned it. Designed to replace the outdated 17th century National Library in central Paris, critics have described the modern monolith as a waste of money. Rising up 18-storeys high in the shape of open books along the Seine river, is President Mitterrand's most ambitious, expensive and controversial contribution to the capital's cultural landscape. Launched in 1988 as a state-of-the-art library, it cost 8.5 billion francs to build, and will cost an estimated 1 billion francs per year to operate. Though some consider it a monstrous waste of money, others maintai...

Specifically designed for it’s location in the Seine Rive Gauche district, the basic concept is composed of four tall towers that define the boundaries of an esplanade, which is hollowed out of the ground to create a vast forest-garden. The four beacon-like markers with an area measuring up to 350,000 m2 were constructed on a stretch of industrial wasteland, each one comprised of wood, metal, concrete and glass. They were designed to resemble four open books all open towards one another, to imply a volume and symbolic space. The establishment of the open square gives the notion of accessibility and availability, inviting the public to enjoy the square. It’s semi-industrial approach is obvious at every scale, particularly with the use of stainless steel. Different meshes of the steel are woven into panels to be used as coverings for walls and ceilings, as well as partitions and outdoor plant rooms. The monumental towers are draped in stainless steel, by the application of five meter high panels that are tiled to create the surfaces. This use of mesh is present on all levels of the building; in the research rooms, the technical ducts are hidden under a ceiling of mesh, which also serves to control the acoustics. In the reading rooms, a similar technique is used more decoratively, creating a wave-like effect across the ceiling. The conference room uses the meshes as stage curtains, the stainless steel falling in folds from the ceiling.

Which of these amazing libraries would you most like to visit? Let us know in the comments below and subscribe to our channel for more informative videos just like this – thanks for watching! 8 - Libraries – hospitals for the mind… Norway is home to the Vennesla Library designed by Helen & Hard Architects. The structure has been described as ribs hugging the ceiling, which makes the interior look like a skeleton. The new building was officially opened in 2011, and has won many awards for its unique architectural design. Each rib allows light to flow naturally for the reader and also has special material to absorb the sound, making it extra quiet for readers. 7 - Back to the Abbey…. It seems that the Abbey’s really do have the most picturesque libraries. The Wiblingen Monastery Library in Germany was completed in 1744, although the actual abbey has been in place since 1093. They modeled it after the Austrian National Library, and it’s open to the public today for visits. 6 - For the love of books… The National Library of France – also referred to as BNF - is breathtaking. Home to 14 million books, documents, and many other items – around 150 000 items are added to the collection every year. As a visitor, you have access to around 3 million of the documents. The BNF is the national repository for everything published in France and is also home to exhibitions, concerts and events throughout the year. 5 - So many books, so little time… The Conarte Library designed by Anagrama is based in Mexico. What makes this library so unique, is the intriguing reading nook that has been installed. This library come bookshop, encourages guests to stay longer and immerse themselves in books. The design is meant to strike a balance between colour and perspective and create depth. Regardless of the intricacies of the design, it’s a spot where you’ll definitely get lost in a good book. 4 - There’s no such thing as too many books… The Villanueva Public Library in Colombia is a library made from love and commitment. The entire building is made using locally sourced materials and the community all lent a hand to put it together. The people collected stones from the rivers and wood from the forests and they worked together to build the library. There’s plenty ventilation and shade, offering a cool space for the otherwise impoverished community. 3 - Reading is dreaming with eyes open… Our next stop is at Jay Walker's Private Library in the states. Not only is it filled with the most amazing collection of books, but there are so many intriguing artifacts. Wire has labeled it “the most amazing library in the world.” In this treasure cove, you will find books bound by rubies, a list of mortalities from the plague in 1665, a Sputnik and a chandelier from the movie Die Another Day. 2 - There’s always time for a story… Nicknamed the Mega Library, the José Vasconcelos Library in Mexico is 409 000 square feet! Inside you’ll find a whale skeleton, 500 000 books on display over 5 stories, transparent walls, interesting walkways and even mismatched floors. Outside you’ll find a moat and extensive botanical gardens. 1 – Books are loyal friends… This is the Joanina Library in Portugal, which was built in the 18th century. It’s a National Monument and one of the main tourist’s attractions in Coimbra. It received its first books in 1750 and is now home to 1.5 million books. At night time, the library is home to bats that keep the insects at bay, so they don’t destroy the books!

Though some consider it a monstrous waste of money, others maintain that the library - located across the Seine from the new Finance Ministry and the Bercy sports stadium in Southwest Paris - will bring new life to this former industrial wasteland. In any case, it is perhaps the most monumental of the "grand projects" launched by the late President Mitterrand, and the one closest to his heart as a man of letters. Despite being in the last stages of cancer, he insisted on presiding over the completion of the building in March 1995. Mitterrand's successor President Jacques Chirac fittingly decided to pay homage to his final project by naming it after him. SOUNDBITE : (French) "I think it is rather legitimate. I don't know if he would have liked it. He often said that he did not want the library to be called after his name. But he followed the building of the library from the first studies to the building itself. So from my point of view, which is not an objective one, I am rather pleased and touched that it is called Francois Mitterrand" SUPERCAPTION : Dominique Perrault, architect of the National Library The library combines the priceless old treasures of the former library with cutting-edge computer technology and interactive audio-visual tools. 380-thousand reference books are to be available to the public. But three days before doors are to open to the general public, only 180-thousand are in place. The library's lower levels, reserved for scholars and researchers are not expected to open before 1998. Quimper Media Library Quimper is a town in north western France renowned for its 13th century Gothic cathedral and for its pottery and porcelain, manufactured there since the 17th century. An Ursuline convent dating from the 18th century has this year been given a modern extension. The convent has been transformed into a media library. Two of the media library rooms contain very ancient, rare books and here use has been made of the Frontline Shelving System in beech. The public sections feature the Classic Steel Shelving System with an intergrated lighting system that illuminates each shelf.
